This was meant to be a quick warm up, but it turned into a comic that I’ve wanted to draw for a while. This is something that is extremely important to me, and I appreciate it if you read it.

A while ago, I heard a story that broke my heart. A family went a cat shelter to adopt. The daughter fell in love with a 3-legged cat. The father straight up said “absolutely not”. Because he was missing a leg. That cat was that close to having a family that loved him, but the missing leg held him back. Why?!

Many people have the initial instinct of “nope” when they see an imperfect animal. I get it, but less-adoptable does NOT mean less loveable. 9 out of 10 people will choose a kitten over an adult cat. And those 10% that would get an adult cat often overlook “different” animals.

All I want people to do is be open to the idea of having a “different” pet in their lives. Choose the pet that you fall in love with, but at least give all of them a fair shot at winning your heart.

Don’t dismiss them, they deserve a loving home just as much as any other cat. They still purr, they still love a warm lap, they still play, they still love you. Trust me, next time you are in the market for a new kitty, just go over to that one cat that’s missing an eye and see what he’s all about!

As someone who regularly volunteers at an animal shelter this is so so so important!

as someone who once volunteered at an animal shelter this is so so true!

As someone who adopted a 9 year old cat with one tooth, I completely agree! <3

My first adopted cat was 9 years old (10 going on 11 now). She’s gray and flabby but she was also the most loving lap cat in the entire shelter and has yet to show me otherwise. I remembered leaving the adoption center with her in a carrier and chatting with a lady who had just adopted a kitten. When I told her I had adopted an old cat she was like “GOOD FOR YOU!” I know it was meant to be a compliment, but I didn’t think I was doing a charity case… I was actually sort of offended. I picked her based on her personality and she seemed like a perfectly fine cat so I didn’t understand why it was “good” of me to adopt her based on age.

My second cat is a siamese tabby and he was overlooked because he had a big sign on his cage that says “requires special nutrition”. He had a urinary tract infection when he came in and now has to eat a special formula his entire life. He’s 4 years old. People assume that the medical problems and special nutrition would make him a costly cat—it turns out the special kibble he eats costs about the same as regular dry cat food! And he’s the most energetic, athletic and healthy cat I’ve seen. I also picked up based on his personality (he clambered up my shoulder and stood boldly like the king of the mountain the second the cage opened)

There’s some other pros to having a fully grown cat as well compared to a kitten! If you’re like me who works all day and comes home at night, a kitten might need a lot of time and supervision, while an adult cat can probably keep to itself. Not to mention, they will probably already house-trained! I have a friend who had to teach her cat how to properly use a litter box.

Here’s something else to consider! Kittens rely on observing other grown up cats on how to properly behave. Having an extremely young kitten who doesn’t quite know how to give off proper signals or behave around other humans and cats might actually cause problems for you in the future: such as unwanted peeing around the house, extreme fearfulness/anxiety, aggression, and sometimes over dependence on their owners (to name a few).

A little off topic, but my friends have also commented why I would pick two gray cats. (one is a gray tabby but she looks mostly solid gray, and the other is a light gray tabby with a cream and white belly). Why not go for more beautiful cats with more unique markings? Again, I based my decision on who much I thought they would be compatible with me personality-wise which I hope people also consider rather than just cuteness and looks! Because you never know what sorts of problems a cat might have without getting to know it first!

Yes yes yes a thousand times yes! Adult cats need love too! Kittens are bound to find a home no matter what so if you’re looking to adopt, take a peek at the older cats! We recently adopted a gorgeous girl from the shelter who had been overlooked because she wasn’t super people friendly but she’s warming up to all of us really well now. Our roommate also adopted a ten year old persian/Himalayan mix who is absolutely gorgeous!

Give the older crew a chance!

How dare we bring Krispy Kreme in this house, she says. Only Dunkin is comfortable enough, she says. Thanks, Vi.
